🚫 Minimum Approach Distances
• 400 m from all killer whales in southern BC waters (Campbell River to Ucluelet)
• 200 m from killer whales in other BC Pacific waters
• 200 m from whales, dolphins, or porpoises that are resting or with calves
• 100 m from all other whales, dolphins, and porpoises
Exceptions:
• ■ Purple AV Flag — Authorized whale-watching vessels may approach non-Southern Resident killer whales to 200 m
• ▲ Yellow MML Flag — DFO-licensed research vessels may operate within minimum distances under their permit
🚤 Speed & Behaviour
• Slow to 7 knots within 1,000 m of whales
• Do not position your vessel in the path of whales
• Do not approach from the front or behind
• Turn off fish finders and echo sounders within 1,000 m
